Bonsai Watering and Drainage

We are often asked to describe what exactly is the mix that Bonsai grow best in. First of all, it's important to understand that these specialty trees are not actually grown in dirt or soil like you find in a field or the ground where you live. Like orchids, Bonsai are grown in unique mixes of materials we call medium or media.

There is a wide range of these materials, and here at rePotBonsai.com we have assembled what is probably the widest selection of choices on the planet! Examples range from Akadama and Kanuma from Japan to special Monterey Pine chips imported from New Zealand. We have Broken Brick and even Chunky Peat that comes from Eastern Europe. Granite Grit from North Carolina and Rice Hulls from Arkansas. If you need a non dirt medium, we probably have it. If we don't, let us know and we will do our best to get it.

Turface is one of the special mediums we carry that is a popular component because it is a type of clay that is fired in extremely high heat to the point where it will not break down in your mix and this heating process creates tiny openings in each granule that hold oxygen and also water that the plant can slowly absorb as needed. Stalite is another unusual component that is excellent in a bonsai mix. Made in intense heat with special rotary kilns, it is actually expanded slate which also contains tiny openings which roots love to work into and around for moisture and air. We have inorganics (rock media) and organics ( peat, sphagnum, pine, fir etc ) so the mix you want can be any type and any percentage. Each plant and each growing environment is unique, so we let you decide what is best for your needs and those of your spectacular plant.
