Bonsai Media Screening
What about screening?
Screens and sieves are used to sift bonsai medium (what makes up the mix) into particle sizes considered appropriate for different sized containers your bonsai will grow in. For example, a typical bonsai container with a width of 10 to 12 inches and depth of 1 or 2 inches would usually have mixed particles of approximately 1/4 inch or less. For smaller bonsai like Shohin, the diameter of the particles would be screened to more like 1/8 to 1/16 of an inch. Dust particles should be removed because these "fines" are responsible for reducing oxygen in the mix and can harm root development.
Screens can be acquired inexpensively at the local hardware or big box store where screening is sold. Convenient sieve sets (sort of like those used when panning for gold) are also available. Whether you get a pre-made mix from us, or individual medias that you will use straight or mix yourself, taking the time to work the ingredients for your particular application is part of the fun! We have just about every medium there is, and we bring in new ones all the time, so you can have us make the mix or you can have us ship you the separate medias, whichever you prefer. We don’t want to crimp your style or your sense of adventure. On the other hand, if you would prefer to trust our craftsmanship, we make a variety of mixes with proven components, and we can ship them to you right away too.
You are the boss, just let us know what you want and we will make it happen! Our goal is to delight you, and to ship your order out the same day we receive it.
