Small Cork Chips

rePotme is happy to carry the finest grade natural cork from Portugal. Cork is a natural product that is produced from the bark of the Cork Oak or quercus suber tree, which grows in countries around the Mediterranean, predominately in Portugal and Spain. The bark of a cork tree is carefully removed every 9 to 10 years by experienced professional harvesters and the tree then grows a new thick coat of bark, almost like sheep grow wool! Cork harvesters cycle through the trees in a manner that creates a reliable source of this unique wood. Cork is a renewable resource, the average life span of a cork tree is more than 200 years. plants love growing in, on and around cork like the type we carry because the roots work their way in and around the craggy surfaces and texture. The added benefit of cork for plants is that it holds virtually no water, lasts very very long and mixes well with other media to make spectacular mix combinations. Mixes made with cork are typically quite open and airy which is perfect for most plants. Extra Small Cork Chips, Medium Cork Chips and Large Cork Chips are also available.
We carry multiple sizes of cork pieces: extra small is less than 1/4 inch, small is 1/4 inch, medium is 1/2 inch and large is 1 inch. You can also find cork mounts and cork tubes in our plant Supplies section. The mounts are also from Portugal and are solid larger pieces as big as 8 inches by 8 inches or even larger by special request.
All of our mediums are of the highest quality and come in a variety of textures, sizes, chips, and pieces. Bonsai require free draining water retentive mixes. Sifting various material available here by you to the appropriate size and make-up that is right for your particular application is assumed. Considerations in arriving at the "best" mix for your bonsai should include aeration, drainage, water retention, and proper PH.
Oxygen is critical to root health and the mediums we offer are intended to promote great access to oxygen while also allowing excellent drainage. Mixing and sifting various mediums to create just the right combination and particle size is part of the fun of experimenting to find the perfect mix. We have assembled an extraordinary menu of choices for you to try here at rePot Bonsai.com, and we encourage you to try any or all of the familiar, unusual and exotic mix components we have assembled for your consideration.
