Lava rock is an excellent base for an inorganic rock mix. Many times if you get a Dendrobium from Hawaii you will notice that it has been potted in either black or red volcanic rock. This lava rock has good water retention with excellent aeration. Because it is inorganic, the mix will not break down and plants that resent repotting can be left in their mix longer. Volcanic rock is a primary ingredient in our Inorganic Blend. Particle size is about 1/2 inch. Small Lava Rock and Large Lava Rock are also available.

All of our mediums are of the highest quality and come in a variety of textures, sizes, chips, and pieces. Bonsai require free draining water retentive mixes. Sifting various material available here by you to the appropriate size and make-up that is right for your particular application is assumed. Considerations in arriving at the "best" mix for your bonsai should include aeration, drainage, water retention, and proper PH.
